John Byrne: Rock 'n' Roll

24 November - 23 December 2017
Overview

The Fine Art Society presents Rock ‘n’ Roll, a selling exhibition of works by John Byrne RSA. Central to the exhibition is a large scale oil The Song of the South, which records the link between the thriving textile industry of ninteenth century Paisley and cotton imported from slave plantations in the American south. The musical roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll can be traced through Rhythm and Blues to the songs sung by slave workers on these plantations. These ten exhibited paintings bring together elements of the Teddy Boy subculture, music and Black culture in American cities.
