Hylton Nel at Eighty

17 June - 30 July 2021
Overview

For the London Art Week 2021, displayed in our gallery on Soho's Carnaby Street, we are thrilled to present Hylton Nel at Eighty. Celebrating Hylton's 80th birthday year and over five decades working as an 'artist-potter', this exhibition is also significant as it marks his relationship with The Fine Art Society which spans a quarter of a century.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a selection cats and figurines that have been made especially for the occasion. These brightly decorated, sculptural works are reminiscent of English pottery of Staffordshire and Wedgwood, as well as European maiolica and Delftware. Accompanying these figurines are newly made vases, bowls and plates. As always, Hylton's ceramics are satirical, witty and tactile, and are at once decorative and utilitarian: objects to be handled and used, as much as they are to be admired.

This exhibition of hand built ceramics includes works from the 1990s from when the artist first began exhibiting with us, with a group of works from the Andrew McIntosh Patrick collection, through the 2000s to the present-day. For the past five decades, Nel has developed a rich visual language filled with references to decorative arts from across the world: from literary and art historical sources, to objects and images collected from popular media whilst living between Europe and South Africa.
