David Eustace: Memento Mori: at Gleneagles Townhouse

15 September - 9 October 2022

Following the exhibition in our gallery at 25 Carnaby Street, The Fine Art Society presents Scottish photographer and director David Eustace's  Memento Mori at Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh, from 15 September to 9 October 2022.

The works are selected from Eustace’s most recent work responding to the perception and inevitability of death. The idea for the collection dates to 2018, on a visit to Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris with friend and fellow artist, Douglas Gordon. While sitting next to Gertrude Stein’s grave, Eustace collected some leaves in a box which went forgotten until lockdown two years ago. He started studying decaying plants and flowers and of course took pictures which then developed into a series. Eustace’s arresting and humbling documentation of decaying flowers serves as a reminder of our own immediacy and fragility.

David Eustace is a photographer and director known for his fashion, celebrity and art photography. His images have been exhibited internationally and are held in private and public collections worldwide.

“Many celebrate the cherry tree blossom in full bloom, while others grow disappointed when its flowers last only a few weeks, having waited so long to witness such splendour. Many celebrate not the bloom but the fragility and impermanence, so splendid, with anticipation and longing. They savour the moment, knowing it will pass."
