Scandinavian Silver

1 - 28 February 2018

The Fine Art Society presents an exhibition representing the multifacieted aspects of modern design silverware which developed across Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden throughout the twentieth century.

These pieces demonstrate the diversity of styles, and the idiosyncratic characteristics that developed in field of modern design in Skandinavia as a reaction to Post War austerity.  Beginning with early Art Nouveau inspired jewellery, Flatware and Hollowware by George Jensen, the show explores the  innovation and experimentation of Scandinavian design, through the formal Art Deco period of the 1920s and 30s; and the functional and restrained designs of the Postwar era; to the minimal and kinetic jewellery of the 1960s and 70s; and the elegant, organic designs of the 1980s.
