Joan Eardley RSA 1921-1964

Overview

Joan Kathleen Harding Eardley, born in Brighton of Anglo-Scottish parents, first studied at Goldsmith's in London and then Glasgow School of Art. After returning from a travelling scholarship in France and Italy she established herself in Townhead, Glasgow; a very depressed part of the city and an unusual choice for a lone woman. During this time she visited Catterline on the east coast of Scotland, and lived there in 1956 but continued to keep her studio in Glasgow.

Studies of children painted during the Townhead period usually depict her neighbours, the Samson children and Andrew Samson, the subject of this painting, remembers being given comics by the artist and posing for many hours in her studio.
