Iain Macnab was born in the Philippines, the son of an official in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. His family move to Kilmalcolm in 1894, and in 1917 he took up his studies at the Glasgow School of Art. Until 1926 MacNab worked as an etcher, then turning to wood engraving, a medium in which he excelled. He often worked in Spain, Corsica and the South of France.
In 1925, Macnab became the founding Principal of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art at his house in Pimlico, where students included Sybil Andrews, Cyril Power, Gwenda Morgan and Lill Tschudi.
