Between Tides: Scotland's working culture of the sea

For centuries, artists have been inspired by the sea.

A natural boundary, Scotland's coasts and seas are dramatic, varied, highly productive and often awe-inspiring. This exhibition looks at the varied interpretations of a common subject, whether it be natural history, industry, or the people whose lives are determined and shaped by the sea.

‘Between Tides’ brought together work on film by Oscar Marzaroli of oil rigs and ship building from the 1960s and 70s; Will Maclean’s work from the 70s and 80s draws on the culture and mythology of fishing communities; Sam Bough, William McTaggart, W S MacGeorge and Ian Fleming took subjects as culturally defining as migration to trawler fishing and the fishing villages through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
