This October, the gallery will display pieces of furniture by some of the most renowned figures of Modern Design alongside post-war figurative and abstract works of art. Artists featured will include Ivon Hitchens, Mary Potter, Unity Spencer, Edward Bawden, and Gillian Ayres. These works reflect the seismic change that took place in the British art scene following the end of the Second World War, as artists explored new paths in painting and representation.
Furniture by British designers Sir Terence Conran, Sir Basil Spence and Gerald Summers will form part of the display, as well as examples by European and American designers such as Nanna Ditzel, Andre Dubreuil, Henry William Klein, Florence Knoll, Cesare Lacca, Rene Mathieu, Jon Mills, George Nelson and Hans Jørgensen Wegner. Some furniture will be on view in our first floor gallery, with more pieces of modern design furniture on the top floor as well.
