Only seven people have held the position of Managing Director in the past 141 years of The Fine Art Society’s history, the present incumbent being Pippa Stockdale, who joined in 2015.
Formerly Managing Director of Bonhams New Bond Street and Knightsbridge galleries, Pippa worked for the company for twenty years. Primarily Pippa was in charge of Bonhams Picture department at Chelsea, responsible for over forty auctions a year and specialising in 19th & early 20th Century oil paintings, early 20th Century prints and Post War & Contemporary Art & Design. Over the years she put together many specialist auctions and exhibitions from the themed annual auctions to the selling exhibition of David Bailey’s work: ‘Pure Bailey. Pure Bonhams’ in 2010.
Prior to working for Bonhams Pippa had worked at Capes Dunn & Co auctioneers in Manchester and for the Woollahra Galleries in Sydney, Australia.
